CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna -- A traffic enforcer in San Pablo City escaped unscathed on Sunday morning when two motorcycle-riding men fired shots at him but missed, wounding instead a bystander, police said.

Dante Liwag and a companion were on board their Volkswagen car along Colago Avenue when the gunmen shot at him at around 9:30 a.m., said Supt. Raul Bargamento, San Pablo City police chief.

Liwag and his companion were unhurt but a male bystander, who had yet to be identified, sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the body and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Liwag is a member of the traffic enforcement group and a staff of San Pablo City Mayor Vicente Amante, according to Bargamento.

Initial investigation showed Liwag had been receiving death threats, but these were more due to a “personal skirmish,” said Bargamento.

“We have discounted politics as a motive,” he added.
