Woman who begged off from Lent trip is saved

SAN PABLO CITY, Philippines – A parishioner, who was supposed to be among those involved in the vehicular accident, which killed 12 people and injured 39 others, was profusely thanking God for saving her life as she celebrated her 50th birthday.

Violy Delmo, 50, a member of the Lectors and Commentators Ministry of the Chair of St. Peter Parish in Balibago, Sta. Rosa City, was shaking uncontrollably as she related to the Inquirer that she could have been among those involved in the accident had she not celebrated her birthday in her native town in San Pablo City on the day the group, loaded in five buses, left for Baguio City.

She said she could have gone with the group had it not been her birthday that Saturday, the day the group left for Baguio City to visit Catholic churches there for their Lenten Visita Iglesia.

She said because it was her birthday, she begged off from the pilgrimage.

Delmo said she could have been at the fifth bus, which was the one that met tragedy, as her close friends were there.

One of the fatalities was the president of the Parish Finance Council.

Priests and members of religious groups in Sta. Rosa and San Pablo City were advised against traveling long distances especially if they would have to pass through dangerous roads.
