Noynoy to attend wedding on June 12 of Laguna Rep. Ma. Evita "Ivy" Arago

President-elect Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III will be playing godfather at a colleague's wedding in Laguna on Saturday, instead of joining President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her last Independence Day celebration as chief executive.

Aquino said he has not been informed of any invitation from Malaca├▒ang to attend the June 12 celebration at the Rizal Park (Luneta), adding that traditionally the president-elect does not have an official role in such rites.

"June 12 celebrations, there are specific roles for president, vice president, Senate president, House Speaker, chief justice," Aquino said at a press briefing in his Times Street home on Thursday. "I am not in any of those positions yet."

"On June 12 itself, I already committed to act as godfather to a party mate who is getting married," he said, referring to the wedding of Liberal Party member Laguna Rep. Ma. Evita "Ivy" Arago in San Pablo City.

Aquino said he has qualms about attending celebrations marked for June 14, which has been declared a holiday.

However, there are no official activities scheduled for June 14.

President Arroyo, through Proclamation No. 1841, earlier moved the commemoration of Philippine Independence Day — originally celebrated on June 12 — to the nearest Monday, June 14.

"I have reservations attending Independence Day celebrations two days after the date. I think that should be an immovable holiday," said Aquino.

On Saturday, President Arroyo will lead the flag-raising ceremony at 7 a.m. and preside over Vin d'Honneur [part of formal celebratory rite] at the Palace before returning to Rizal Park to attend the Independence Day parade.
