Start of SLEx CALAMBA - LUCENA could take months

MALAYSIAN-LED South Luzon Tollways Corp. (SLTC), said last Friday that they hope to start soon the construction of Toll Road 4, which will extend the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx) from Calamba in Laguna to Lucena City in Quezon province.

According to SLTC spokesperson Alma Tuason, contractor of the SLEx, the groundbreaking for the new toll road will be on June 15.

However, she said they still have to acquire the right of way and conduct studies to know which properties will be affected by the construction.

"It will take us months to finish the studies. After conducting the necessary studies prior to construction, we will also have to wait for the government’s approval for our right of way," Ms. Tuason said.

She added that the construction of Toll Road 4 is the second phase of Malaysian firm MTD Capital Bhd.’s contract with the Philippines.
Ms. Tuason said that for the Toll Road 3, it took them more than a year to finish the studies and the acquisition of right of way in 2006.
SLTC has widened the 1.2-kilometer Alabang viaduct and the 27-kilometer stretch of the SLEx from Alabang to Calamba, Laguna
