1 highway robber killed, 3 captured in Quezon

A Tarlac policeman foiled the highway robbery attempt of four suspects and killed one of them in a shootout late Friday evening, police said Saturday.

Senior Inspector Javier Baasis, Quezon police media relations officer, said at around 9:30 p.m. the suspects aboard a Lucena-bound JAC Liner Bus with body number 8226 declared a robbery as the bus was traveling along the Maharlika Highway in the village of San Francisco, San Pablo City.

Baasis said that as the suspects started seizing valuables from the passengers, Police Officer 2 Marvin Musni Ramos from the Tarlac City station who was in civilian clothes, saw an opportunity as he knew that the bus was approaching a police detachment in the village of Lalig in nearby Tiaong, Quezon.

Ramos engaged one of the suspects, Jay-R Aranz, in a shootout using his service pistol, Baasis said.

The three other suspects – Ralph Vargaz, Emmanuel Ylagan and John Ortiz - were forced to surrender by responding policemen from the Lalig police detachment, he said.

Baasis said Aranz was rushed to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
