Laguna, Cavite new centers of illegal firecrackers

The Southern Police District (SPD) director has ordered the tight watch of delivery trucks and vans originating from Cavite and Laguna based on information that these are the source areas for powerful and illegal firecrackers that now crawling their way to Metro Manila.

Chief Supt. Jose Arne de los Santos instructed the police chiefs of the cities of Muntinlupa, Parañaque and Las Piñas to closely monitor checkpoints in their areas where delivery vehicles would be able to bring in these types of firecrackers.

De los Santos gave out the order a few weeks ahead of New Year’s Eve revelry, noting that some businessmen are now reportedly flooding the metropolis with powerful firecrackers from Cavite and Laguna, and not from Bulacan as in previous years.

He said that this was due to the intensified campaign of provincial police in Bulacan, which forced the firecracker makers and traders to switch their area of operations.

According to reports, most of the imported firecrackers and pyrotechnics have come from Region IV making the Southern part of Metro Manila a preferred entry point.

De los Santos likewise warned vendors and proprietors not to peddle illegal firecrackers since these would be considered as contraband and will be confiscated by police. Appropriate charges will also be filed against violators before court, he added.

The police official, however, clarified that they would only seize the pre-identified illegal types of firecrackers while non-prohibited types that have the necessary papers would be allowed for delivery and distribution.
