Spoelstra’s relatives excited for NBA Finals

When the Miami Heat reached the NBA Finals, Filipino basketball fans everywhere cheered, not just for Miami’s Big Three. They also lauded Coach Erik Spoelstra, the first Filipino and first Asian coach to reach the NBA Finals.

Some Filipino fans were happier than the others.

Tony and Minda Celino from Laguna said they are more emotionally attached to the Heat’s success than most fans. This is because Coach Spoelstra is their nephew.

Elisa Celino, Erik’s mother, came from San Pablo City. Jo Spoelstra, his father, became an NBA executive.

“Sino bang hindi matutuwa na ang pamangkin mo ay first Fil-Am head coach ng NBA,” asked Tony.

He and Minda are clearly excited for their nephew, especially now that his team has reached the Finals.

“Last visit nga n’ya, sabi n’ya, ‘Probably I’ll not be getting in touch with you,’” said Tony. This was because his nephew is focused on the “the big W: win, win, win.”

Tony said Spoelstra’s biggest challenge was getting the Heat’s trio of superstars to work together.

“Andyan si (LeBron) James, (Chris) Bosh, (Dwyane) Wade. Papaano n’ya titimplahin para mag-blend,” he asked.

The couple said that despite growing up in the United States, Spoelstra remains humble.

They hope that their fellow Filipinos will support Spoelstra in his quest to win an NBA championship.
